Gajner Palace
Near Bikaner, Rajasthan
In the Thar Desert, on the edge of a lake teeming with birdlife, the Gajner Palace stretches over 6000 acres of peaceful and tranquil forested land. The palace was a popular hunting resort during the British Raj. Now nicely restored to its old glory, this sprawling majestic palace, with its distinctive terraces and balconies is an ideal getaway to live few days of unhurried life, explore a world of nature-walks, boat-rides and desert safaris.

The hotel's 13 historic suites are located in Dungar Niwas where the British dignitaries stayed during their leisure trips. They have been meticulously restored and every detail - from the furniture to the wallpaper, the four-poster beds and picturesque windows, all have been carefully recreated. The 32 deluxe rooms are spread over the entire palace.

Previously the ballroom, the restaurant serves Indian, Mughlai and Continental cuisine. The Terrace, an extension to the restaurant, overlooking the lake and sanctuary, is where folk and tribal dancers regale guests through the evening.
Activities and Excursions :
During winter season, this palace, with its beautiful lake and surrounded wooded areas, becomes home for different species of migratory birds, most important being the Imperial Sand Grouse. In the surrounding forest, endangered animals like chinkara, blackbug, neelgai and the wild boar can be seen roaming freely. This gives the visitors an opportunity to witness bird and wildlife at close quarters in the most peaceful surroundings. One can go boating on the lake and jeep or camel safari can be organised to the sand dunes near the sanctuary.

Also visit the desert town of Bikaner (45 km / 45 minutes) which, like many other Rajasthan cities, is surrounded by a high crenulated wall. Like its smaller sister to the south, Jaisalmer, it was once an important staging post on the great caravan trade routes.
