Ahilya Fort
Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh
Once the capital of India's celebrated woman ruler Ahilya Bai Holkar, the 18th century Ahilya Fort has one of the most dramatic and unique setting of a hotel. Enclosed within massive walls, it is perched on the edge of a cliff and has staggering views over the sacred Narmada River and the ghats immediately below. Within the fort there are gardens, pretty courtyards and verandahs, hidden terraces and turrets where you can wander around and get away from it all.

The Fort offers 1 Suite, 11 Rooms and 2 Tents. The suite is large and has a separate sitting room and a spacious balcony. All rooms have either a stunning view of the river, a private balcony or a private garden. The tents are large and comfortable and private, being tucked away in a private garden with spectacular views of the river and temples.

Indian and Continental meals are served on the ramparts of the fort, overlooking the river, or a shady, leafy courtyard or on the patio during the day while candlelit dinners are served in the garden by the pool or on the terrace.
